The lush and awe-inspiring beauty of the Alps, shot with artistic grace under natural light from winter to redemptive spring, is Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. Set in the small mountain village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, this singular portrait of an extended family follows a dramatic, consequential series of events following the arrival of a quiet Sicilian soldier (Giuseppe Di Domenico) in hiding. The town after the army deserts. While there, the soldier develops a romantic relationship with the family’s eldest daughter, Lucia (Martina Scrinzi). ‘Vermiglio’ shows the life of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Drawing on stories from her own family’s past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human story that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through Lucia’s perspective, ‘Vermiglio’ feels different and novel.
