Non-descript character: Where do you worship?
Scenario
After being released from prison after 25 years, New York mob captain Dwight “The General” Manfredi is exiled to Tulsa, Oklahoma. Dwight “The General” Manfredi: I really don’t go to church. The opening credits sequence shows various photographic and painted views, as well as Oklahoma landmarks imposed on the New York City landscape: a statue of Sioux Indian Chief “Touch the Clouds”; wearing a war bonnet and bone choker (breastplate) set atop the Brooklyn Bridge, the Golden Driller statue set on the Statue of Liberty, the Route 66 Western Gateway Arch, set on a Major Manhattan “Avenue”. In New York City, in the borough of Manhattan, there are several “Avenues” that are crossed by smaller numbered streets.

I watched it out of curiosity, without any high expectations, I was just surprised to see Stallone in a TV series. You can feel the tension in the scenes and it also seems pretty realistic for what the plot would require. I wouldn’t say it’s funny, but a couple of the funny scenes are a result of Dwight (Stallone) coming out of a 25 year prison sentence and not being fully integrated into the way the world works now, so I guess the abrupt transition will provide some interesting hiccups for us in the future. I’m glad someone explained to him how to use an Uber, it was funny while it lasted.
Obviously Stallone is a huge presence, but the rest of the cast seems pretty good
It’s a pretty clever script but not in a very witty way, which is a good thing. The show literally feels like you took gangsters written for an early 90’s movie and just threw them into 2022, making for a nice blend of humor and violence. I thought this was going to be a throwaway show, like some of Stallion’s recent films are; it mostly just leans on his name and performances, but Taylor Sheridan does a good job here with writing worthy of Stallone’s performances. I think it will be fun to watch the macho Stallone build a criminal empire from scratch, in the middle of nowhere Tulsa.
If it continues this well, if it improves it will be great
I love how he sometimes has this Western oatmeal feel despite being a mobster. I think the show might end up under the radar, only to later make waves with people asking how they never picked up on it before, because I haven’t seen that much hype from Paramount. I went in with no great expectations, but if the premiere episode is anything to go by, this could be a really fun watch. I’ll add a rating after more episodes are released and update if anything drastically changes in the show.
