David Kaplan: Bathroom

Scenario

Some odd cousins get together to go on a trip through Poland in honor of their beloved grandmother. The adventure picks up steam when the odd couple’s old tensions are rekindled in the context of their family history. When Benji and David visit their grandmother’s house in Poland, the place is where Jesse Eisenberg’s real-life ancestors settled in the diaspora. Benji Kaplan: We keep moving, we stay light, we stay agile. David Kaplan: Yeah, Benji Kaplan: The driver will pass by, take our tickets, we tell him we’re going to the bathroom. Benji Kaplan: Reaches the back of the train, starts moving forward, looking for vagrants. David Kaplan: Excuse me, are we late?

That’s our country

Benji Kaplan: Yeah, by the time I get to the front, the train will be in the station and we’ll be home free. David Kaplan: It’s so damn stupid. The tickets are probably about twelve dollars. Benji Kaplan: That’s the beginning of it. We shouldn’t have to pay for train tickets in Poland. David Kaplan: No, it’s not, that was our country. They kicked us out because they thought we were cheap.

12 Studies, Op. 25, No. 3 in F Major By Frederic Chopin Performed by Tzvi Erez. I’ve always enjoyed watching Jesse Eisenberg perform. He usually brings edgy and fast, smart dialogue to his roles. Now he’s won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the Sundance Film Festival for his recent film A REAL PAIN. Eisenberg produced, wrote, and directed this “drama.” The film explores the relationship between estranged cousins David (Jesse Eisenberg) and Benji (Kieran Culkin).

David is a high-profile advertising executive with a wife and son

Benji is a sensitive and very emotionally aware man who is grieving the loss of his grandmother, with whom he was very close. Together they travel to Poland, accompanying a tour group exploring Jewish history, which clearly evokes a variety of difficult emotions in them. It’s a beautiful film with fully developed characters that really develop as it progresses. It’s clear that they’re both going through something, as is everyone involved. The script is nicely paced with a perfect mix of emotional rhythm and comedy. This is actually the second film Eisenberg has written and directed, the first being WHEN YOU’RE FINISHED SAVING THE WORLD, which is now on my must-see list. I knew Kieran Culkin was amazing when I saw SUCCESSION, and he’s even better in this movie.

That said, I can’t help but notice Eisenberg’s performance

In some ways, it’s harder to play a minor role, which he does so well. The film is about generational trauma, pain of all kinds, and the human condition. I hope that REAL PAIN will be the talk of the town come awards season! From Alien: Romulus to Road House, check out some of our favorite posters for 2024.
