Scenario

Hellboy and a rookie B.P.R.D. agent in the 1950s are sent to Appalachia, where they discover an isolated community dominated by witches and ruled by the sinister local demon, the Crooked Man. It is said to have a budget of $20 million, which is the lowest of the four adaptations. Reverend Watts: It’s dark out there.

You would expect Hellboy to be a wild ride full of intense action, epic battles, and the kind of scenes that keep you on the edge of your seat. Instead, we got a movie that was bogged down in endless, mind-numbing dialogue.

It was honestly disappointing

Most of that dialogue wasn’t even coming from Hellboy himself! He felt more like a supporting character in his own movie. The other characters were mostly driving the narrative, leaving Hellboy sidelined and underutilized. The movie dragged on, with way too much unnecessary conversation and not nearly the action we came to see.

The disappointment was crushing

You sit down expecting a badass, fiery adventure with a legendary comic book hero, and instead you get a boring mess where Hellboy barely shines. The pacing was slow, the character development was weak, and it felt like the filmmakers completely missed the point of what makes Hellboy so beloved. It wasn’t just bad, it was so, so, so bad. It’s hard to believe they let such a promising character down so much.
