The DC Studios logo is set in a rainy Gotham alley
Following the events of The Batman (2022), Oz Cobb, aka The Penguin, attempts to take over Gotham’s criminal underworld. Aside from the Bat-Signal in the final shot of the season finale, we never got our Robert Pattinson cameo in “The Penguin.” In this short video, IMDb attempts to answer: Where the heck was Batman?. Colin Farrell fought hard to get his version of The Penguin to smoke tobacco in The Batman (2022), but failed. For his own series, however, the character is depicted as an occasional tobacco user, with a preference for cigars.
He nailed the tone and feel
An umbrella falls and the logo changes to the Warner Bros. logo. Appeared in Graham Norton The Gossips: Lady Gaga/Demi Moore/Colin Farrell/Richard Ayoade/Jack Savoretti (2024). Gritty, dirty and dark, but Farrell manages to capture that glimmer of charm that Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano did.
Where to start with Farrell
There are similarities to The Sopranos, especially in tone. A lot of dark things happen in this opening episode, but there are still comedic moments that fit the tone and don’t undermine it. Amazing is the right word. I love seeing talented actors go all out in roles like this, and the makeup/CGI or whatever they did to physically transform him into the penguin not only passes the visual test, but it looks incredibly realistic.
And Farrell as an actor is completely immersed in this role
There’s always the risk that if the makeup isn’t good enough or is just a little off, it can be completely distracting. In The Penguin, it adds to his performance and the overall quality of the show because it’s such a damn good job. Maybe I’m a little biased because he was one of my favorite actors before this show, but I think this will earn him the accolades he deserves. I never tune into new shows right away because I like to watch the episodes all at once, but I wanted to see how this one would turn out.
Kudos to everyone involved in this project
It didn’t disappoint, in fact it blew me away.
