Anora, a young sex worker from Brooklyn, impulsively meets and marries the son of an oligarch

The script is seductive. Mikey Madison plays the title role, a New York dancer. Then the story hooks us.

Madison is remarkable in her performance, but all the others are good

She gets married awkwardly (the immature young son of a Russian oligarch) and finds herself in a terrible situation. The overabundance of nudity and sex is old-fashioned for a mainstream film, but that and the intense – increasingly comic – drama have a rare vitality. The striking filming locations – Las Vegas and Coney Island in the off-season – are also skillfully captured.

The conclusion isn’t disappointing

At over two hours, it’s too long, but it barely holds our attention because we can’t imagine how it’s going to end. The screenings at the London Film Festival were sold out and I’m not surprised. This is a dynamic film from a fearless director.
